Should Men Dye Their Thin Hair To Make It Look Thicker?

Balding man dying hair

If I said to you I’d never dyed my hair in the past in the hope of making look thicker then I’d be lying. Yes I tried the old wives tale about ‘dye it darker, it will look thicker’, needless to say, it didn’t.

Maybe it was too late for me or maybe it was the wrong colour, either way, I ended up looking a bit of ‘dick’.

Desperation, the constant anxious feeling every day about my hair getting thinner drove me to look for solutions to my problem.

Dying my hair was one option I had to try before I made the mistake of having it thickened, big mistake as I have mentioned previously.

I can understand why some men want to try dying their hair, I totally get it but to be frank, it’s just vanity taking over again.

For some men, it can look OK but you’re kidding yourself if other people don’t notice, the tell tale dye marks around your hairline, the sudden change of colour, the evenness of colour all over your head are all signs you’re a ‘dyer’.

There is nothing wrong with this, I’m not telling you it right or wrong, many men dye their hair for fashion, style, trends, going grey or just boredom, it’s just really not a good thing to do if your losing your hair, especially if the loss is more of an overall loss rather than just a bald patch.

Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.

You’re not facing up the fact that you’re losing your hair

You’re still in denial and looking for solutions to fix the problem rather than looking for ways to embrace your look. Remember you don’t have to shave your head completely, maybe just think about a new style, a shorter cut or buzz cut (one before a shave).

There are plenty of ways you can avoid dying your hair by just thinking about the look you want.

You’re dying your hair because you want to try and ‘hide’ the fact you’re losing it

Sorry but dying it only brings more attention to your hair. People are naturally inquisitive, we want to ask awkward questions, we want answers even if we know we shouldn’t ask – if we don’t get them we only keep on asking!

Dying your hair only gives the message, ‘look at my hair’, therefore, prompting people to ask you the question, “do your dye your hair because you’re going bald”.

The one thing you didn’t want people to do is the one thing they are asking.

Putting the time an effort into your dying your hair is not to be underestimated.

The process is messy and can have mixed results.

It also concerns me that the more you’re trying to keep hold of your hair the more your destroying your hair with dying it, it also can’t be good for your scalp.

Ultimately this is all down to personal choice, we all have the right to chose what we do with our bodies, all I want to say guys is be careful about the choices you make.

What you think might be a solution to your worries might actually create more problems than you wanted, more questions and anxiety about your hair loss.

Look for alternatives, embrace your look and face your worries head on, you will feel better in the end.

  1. Ever since i was 45 up to my present 53, i kept my hair either a skinhead or shaved. I just grew tired of the same look over the years inspite of the fact it did look good on me. No variation, just the skin. So i grew out my hair again even if i was balding at the very crown and had it cut with a variation of the really short all sides with a fade to the top and growing my bangs which im lucky to still have.
Then i dyed it ash grayish blond. It was a transformation that made me interested in myself again, The color was light enough to reflect light and cover my scalp and dark enough to allow my growing roots to add contrast. Im going light gray next time.
I had fun styling my old new look and yes it is thin but not cringeworthy or shameful to look at. My friends and family loved it. When i asked should i shave it again because every 3 weeks it would grow longer and one can see my bald spot which doesnt grow much hair, they adamantly refuse. Insisting that i just labor thru the buzz and fade again since i have visually improved.
I actually look much better now than the skinhead look which i grew tired of. I know in the future i might have to the skinhead look again but today’s hairstyles have advanced to the point you can have short hair all around and just a fringe on the top front (military cut updated) i think i can pull this off for some time. Other guys should try it, this is the best time to try since it is very popular now

    1. Hi there John, thanks for your comment and sorry for the late reply. We have been expanding our content and reviews quite a bit over the last few months here at TBG, our site has become extremely popular and we’ve received many requests from people wanting to work with us all the time.
Again thanks for your comment, it’s a really positive view on keeping your hair short and styled. As mentioned in many posts, shaving your head is massively promoted on our site but so is styling the hair you either have left or have decided to regrow (from the areas on your head where hair is still growing). Your style must really suit you and I’m glad you feel confident with your approach and sharing this with the readers.
